Purple Angel Campaign

 

 September was Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.

As part of their Community Impact Badge the Cubs and Scouts of the Group invited founder Norrms McNamarra of Purple Angels Dementia Awareness, to join them and discuss dementia with the young people.

They learnt more about how this disease effects people in their everyday lives and how they can support sufferers.
During the evening the Cubs and Scouts played various memory games. Norrms explained to the group that Purple Angel run a Memory Café on Saturdays in Torquay.

 

Many of the young people have volunteered to help and offer support where they can. The Cub section are fundraising by replacing the smarties in a tube with 20p pieces,

Owen from Cubs actually sold his Smarties to his Teachers for 20p each !!

 

All funds raised will go towards resources and activities for the Purple Angel Memory Café.

Some of our parents were very impressed how the Scouts engaged with this campaign……

Sarah said “Thank you for getting such an inspirational man in to talk to the Scouts. Reece said that he now understands more about what his grandad is going through after tonight”

 

At the end of the evening Norrms thanked the Cubs and Scouts for inviting him to speak to them and said……

 

As you all know I am a HUGE fan of the youth of today and if these guys are anything to go by, our future is looking good!

These evenings couldn’t have gone any better. What a great group of “Young People” they all were, they asked questions but even better were so attentive, they all were great and so clued up and it gives me great pleasure to make them all Young Purple Angel Ambassadors, and to announce that 1st Marldon Group the first “Dementia Aware Scout Group” in Torbay.

 

The Purple Angel hold a Memory Café at Barton Baptist Church, Happaway Road, Torquay, this runs every Saturday afternoon (apart from the first Saturday of the month).

The Purple Angel Memory Cafe is open to anyone worried about their memory, worried about someone else’s memory or affected by dementia.

The cafe provides practical information and support, as well as the opportunity for people with dementia, their families and carers to ask questions and to listen to others experiences.

During September, the Scouts took part in the
‘National Make Your Mark Campaign’.

Make Your Mark gives a unique opportunity to reach out to young people who go on to become opinion formers and leaders of the future.

Joining with over 900,000 young people from every corner of the country, the Scouts helped to take part in the UKs largest youth consultation.


Following a presentation of his work at the Youth Parliament, Jack Horder, visited the Scouts and discussed the topics that were to be voted on.

Ten Subjects were discussed ranging from voting for young people from
16 years old through to Mental Health services and protection for LGBT+ people

 

At the end of the evening Jack, himself an Explorer from Newton Abbot said,

“It was great to see the Scouts fully engaged and discussing the topics as a group”.

The ballot will decide what Members of the UK Youth Parliament should debate and vote on to be their campaign for in 2018. The debate will take place in November 2017 within the House of Commons.

Remembrance Parade 2016

The years Remembrance Service was attended by a total of  63 members  across all three sections of our scout group.

All of the Leaders were very proud of you all, their behaviour was outstanding and we received numerous complimentary comments from the congregation including how smart we all were.remem-day2

Well done to our flag bearers Tallulah and Millie, for the Scouts, Reece, for the Cubs and Harry for the Beavers.

Our readers that lead the Prayers,  Isobel, Amelie, Flora, Joe, Olivia and Emily, you all did a fantastic job.

Skye and Dexter laid the wreaths of poppies, on the war memorials in the Church.

Please can you share with all your leaders and scouting members how wonderful it was to see many of them in Church this morning to share the Remembrance Service – the readers and standard bearers were fantastic.Thank you again for your help in bringing the scouting groups to join the services, it is wonderful to see the uniformed youngsters, and particularly means so much to the older members of the congregation at times like the Remembrance service.  All were a credit to you and the rest of the Scouting  Leaders.

 

 

Group Summer Camp 2016

This summer the Group had all three sections camping together, with 60 young people with ages ranging from 6 -14 ½ years.

Thankfully the weather was glorious and the children could enjoy a non-stop fun packed weekend with all the activities planned for them.

Grass sledging, face painting, a variety of inflatables including, a bouncy castle, sumo suits and bungee run. All the children competed against each other on the obstacle and mini assault course.

Many of them overcame their fear of heights on the 7.5 metre Climbing Tower and made it to the top!  Colin from the Climbing Project said “the way the young people worked together to motivate each other to get up the tower was amazing. The Scouts, many for the first time enjoyed, axe throwing and Fire Circus which included fire poi, batons and skipping.

For many of the Beavers not only was it their first time away from home, it was their very first time camping in a tent.

Elaine, the Beaver Leader, said “the Beavers were so excited to be sleeping in a tent with their friends and for two nights. They loved being with the Cubs and Scouts and helping to put up the tents”

Saturday nights entertainment was a Camp Fire provided by David and Sandra Johnson.  Songs, old and new, were learnt.

For some added entertainment, the Scouts performed sketches around the campfire. This was a wonderful time for the group to come together in traditional scouting fashion and enjoy some very funny comedy.

Sunday morning was relaxing with group rounders’, volley ball and our traditional “Tug O’ War” competition. The Beavers are the current holders of the 1st Marldon Trophy for this event and we are still in discussion who this year’s winners are!

John, the Group Scout Leader said “we have seen the group grow quickly in numbers over a short period of time across all the sections and thought it was time to celebrate our success and have the whole group camping together.

Its a Knockout – Scout Style

Scout troops from the 1st Marldon, 3rd Torbay & 15th Torbay got together for an It’s a Knockout style evening at the District Campsite in Torquay.

Over 50 scouts  from the groups worked together with challenging problem solving bases. There was an assault course, four person Sack Race, Wellie Whanging and Water Slip `n` Slide. The bases also help the scouts earn their Team Challenge Badge.

Simon, the Leader from the 3rd Torbay said………..

“A brilliant last night of term joint troop activity night, great to see all the Scouts having so much fun and working together, the adults certainly enjoyed it. Scouting at its best. “

Dave & Sandra from the 15th took charge of the timed Spiders Web Challenge. All of the  Leaders ensured that all the Scouts were suitably hydrated during the evening with their own activity called “Leaders Revenge”

John from the 1st added…….

“This is the second year that we have ran “Its a Knockout” in the Summer Programme. It’s great to see the Scouts from different groups working together as a team to complete the tasks, and more importantly they have really enjoyed themselves.”

This is what scouting is all about, fun, challenging, making new friendships and we have planned this fantastic activity in next years programme already!

 

 

Cubs Spring Camp

 

In March The Cubs were on their Spring Camp, with some new Cubs just moved up from Beavers, we went on a hike down to Watcombe Beach to earn the Navigators Level 2 Badge. Some of the Cubs managed to see more of the hike than the others

“I really enjoyed the long walk we went on”  Luca said, “we found mossy rocks and climbed muddy mountains.We even got lost !!!”

After a busy afternoon of games and an evening of wide games marshmallows were toasted with hot chocolate. The best part of the Camp, Caitlin told us was  “playing spotlight and roasting marshmallows on the fire!”

The following day all the Cubs tried Target Shooting. The “Top Shot” of the Camp went to Callum, 2nd Place went to Joey and 3rd went to Luca who “really enjoyed the shooting it was really fun”

The Cubs practiced their knife skills by whittling a tent peg, and to finish the camp off they made their own “chariots” with pioneering poles and rope,  the knots and lashings  held really well, although a pole managed to snap!! It must of been the OJ’s big cooked breakfast that they had

Joey summed up his first Cub Camp perfectly by saying “Camp was awesome because we did really fun stuff and I was with my friends.  My favourite part of camp was the shooting because it was great fun and I have never done that before.  We did grid references, hiking and map reading.  I learnt lots of new skills like knife work and pioneering.  We were put into teams to build a chariot and had a chariot race.  We did singing around the fire and had hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows before bed. 

I loved staying at camp, it was like having a big sleepover with my friends”

Plenty of Badges earned, friendships made and memories of a great camp.

The Beavers took over the kitchen at the District Headquarters to cook up Reindeer cup cakes in time for Christmas

They donned their Chefs Hats and aprons and set to work measuring and bake 9weighing the ingredients, which were kindly donated by Richard, the manager at our Local Sainsburys in Preston, and were assisted by some willing parents.
