During November and December the Scouts started their training for the Master at Arms Activity Badge.
With Jim, the instructor from Newton Abbot Fencing Club, the scouts learnt
about the importance of warming up before the activity, wearing the correct
protective equipment and learnt about the swords the foil, epee and sabre.
Before we started Cameron said “that he was looking forward to the eveningand thought that fencing was extremely good fun.” Later he said that he found“the instructor very knowledgeable and helpful. I can’t wait until the next time”
After being paired up, the Scouts put on the fencing safety jackets, chest
protectors, face masks and gloves. They practiced the way to advance and
attack. How to stand when “On Guard” and how to Parry the opponents
At the end of the evening Oakley and Zane both said that “they enjoyed
learning about fencing, it was great fun and they liked using the swords”
Tallulah said that “I have really enjoyed this scout evening. Although the maskswere heavy to wear I have liked using all the equipment especially the epeesand the best move that I have learnt was the lunge.”
